Hungry

hunger-now

The Lord replied, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”

The irresistible church. Wayne Cordeiro discusses the twelve traits of a church heaven applauds in his book “The Irresistible Church”. And, yesterday, we began a sermon series on what an irresistible Church would look like to God.

The first trait that God finds irresistible in His Church is a hunger for His Presence. Moses was so hungry for God’s Presence that he was not willing to one step further without Him. Yet, many Churches today would not even notice if the Presence of God ceased to dwell among them. We have become very self-sufficient. We are technically savvy, we are financially stable (many of us), we have raw talent and brute strength to get ‘er done.

Sometimes it is all of the available resources here in the West that keep us from being hungry for God’s Presence. In places like China and India, our brothers and sister in Christ have nothing but the Presence of God.

But Moses knew it was this very Presence that distinguished them from all other people on the face of the earth. And it is still true today. It is the Presence of God’s Spirit that distinguishes Christians from all other faiths. Yet, we are satisfied to be a Presence-less people.

God desires for us to host His Presence. Think about it.

When was the last time you hosted a party or special event? Who was the guest of honor?

A few weeks ago we hosted a graduation party for my son. There was a lot of preparation and planning. Many people pitched in and brought food. A friend ran to get some last minute decorations since I had forgotten that part of party planning. (Thank God for creative friends)

I was nervous and excited and wanted it to be very nice for my son. I wanted him to know all of this was for him because I loved him and I was proud of him.

As Christians, we host the very Presence of God…daily. God’s Spirit dwells within us. Everywhere we go; there He is. And when we gather as a Body of Christ to worship, His Presence should overwhelm us. A Sunday morning worship gathering should be the most dangerous hour of our week, for we are hosting a holy, holy, holy God.

If we want to be a Church God finds irresistible, then we need a renewed hunger for the Presence of God. If that is not us, then we need to begin by confessing our lack of hunger. Ask God that you would hunger and thirst for Him. Seek Him diligently and He will reveal Himself to you.

Today, go and worship Him and host His Presence!

  1. This last year and a half or more I have had a renewed hunger for God. I have had a new desire inside of me to seek Him MORE than ever before, to get to know Him better than I ever have in my life. But it isn’t just KNOWING HIM, it is SERVING HIM. I want to GIVE BACK to HIM just a part (for that is all I could ever give back is a part) of some of the wonderful things He has done and giving to me, and to my family. I WANT TO GIVE BACK! The only way I know how to give back is by doing things for people, doing good works, helping in the church, helping people, being pleasant, being kind, doing whatever is needed anywhere it is needed. Worship God? I can and do worship God. I can do that with all my heart and all my soul. Give me something harder than that to do. I want to worship my God and MY SAVIOR!
