Freedom

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. ~ 2 Corinthians 3:17

It seems these days there is a new rule, a new bill, and a new law added to our system.  It seems we are well on our way to making breathing illegal.  Some of the newest include a law that makes it illegal to text and WALK, lest you find yourself falling into a park fountain.  I can drive about 3 blocks to purchase every illegal substance under our American sky, but now it is illegal (or soon to be) to purchase bath salts.  Yes, SOAP is illegal.

The rationale is that bath salts, when snorted or smoked, caused you to do stupid and evil things…like shoot your parents or eat your best friend’s face.  I’m not sure it is possible to regulate stupid.  And I am more certain it is impossible to regulate evil.

Mankind has been trying to regulate evil for years, and we continue to find ways, created ways to be wicked.  People in Bangladesh mix snake venom with “moonshine” to drive themselves mad.  They then stagger into the streets to ravage children or anyone else they may find.  Evil cannot be regulated by Man.

The Old Testament of the Bible gives us the Law of Moses.  It did a pretty good job at regulating evil…for awhile.   But even the people of God found ways to manipulate the system and do evil instead of the good they knew they should do.

It’s easy to point to that level of evil, evil so extreme we label it “zombie” behavior, and believe it is abnormal.  Yet, we all know that, given the right circumstances (and enough bath salts), we are capable of similar atrocities.  Many of us stand in a place where we resonate with St. Paul saying, “the good I want to do I do not do, and the evil I don’t want to do I do anyway”.  We are trapped in a cycle of doing the things we don’t want to do as if it is not us doing it, but some other entity within our being.  And we ask is it possible to be set free.

Is freedom only a superficial or political statement?  Is freedom from ourselves and our bad choices and our stupidity and our evil even possible?  Are we destined to create the same mistakes and sins over and over again?

Jesus tells us we can be free.  For if the Son sets you free, you are free indeed.  And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.  We can be set free from this body of sin and death.  We can overcome the master of sin and be controlled by the Spirit of Christ.  Come Sunday and let’s talk about what it means to finally be set free.

Keep fighting the good fight of faith!
