Serve!

Dear brothers and sisters, what’s the use of saying you have faith if you don’t prove it by your actions? ~ James 2:14

Perhaps this verse is one of several that is taken out of context.  Many confuse this verse with holiness.  And, while God does call us to live holy lives, this verse it speaking of something else.

It is also a very confusing verse.  It seems to contradict what St. Paul tells the Ephesian church.  “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God– not by works, so that no one can boast.”

But what is clear is that when God comes into our lives, we are different.  And the difference can be seen to others, primarily by how we treat the poor and  disenfranchised.  Maybe we have ceased smoking or drinking.  Maybe our attitude is much improved.  Maybe we attend worship gatherings and read our Bible.  But if we are not taking care of “the least of these”, then our faith is at risk of being useless.

God has called us to make a difference in the world.  And when we serve others, we change as well.  Come Sunday, and you will hear a story of service that changed my life forever.  In the meantime, keep reading the Bible five minutes a day.
