Blessed is the One
Sunday October 24th is ServeFest! We will be serving our community in a multitude of ways. And I am encouraging you to get involved is some way.
In St. Luke’s Gospel, he records the story of John the Baptist sending disciples to ask Jesus if He was “the one who was to come, or should we expect someone else”.
Jesus responds by saying to the men, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is preached to the poor. Blessed is the man who does not fall away on account of me”.
Jesus is quoting from the Old Testament from the prophet, Isaiah. Isaiah foretold the Israelites about the qualities that would mark the ministry of the Messiah. And here Jesus is saying that His actions are able to speak for themselves.
The same should be true for Christ’s Church. The qualities that marked Christ’s earthly ministry should also mark the ministry of His disciples. We have been filled with His Spirit. And the Spirit reminds us of all that Jesus taught and empowers us to fulfill and continue His mission. The actions of the Church should be able to speak for themselves.
And blessed is the one who does not fall away on account of us.
